The Magical Beauty of Angel Oak

Whenever my walking tour guests want to hear my recommendations for some of my favorite things to do in Charleston, SC, I always include the magical, mystical Angel Oak tree located in Johns Island just a short drive from historic downtown. Oh, my list is long to be sure, as there are tons of fabulous things to do and see here in Charleston, but Angel Oak is a definite see when visiting the Holy City.

A tree? Really?

Yes, really! I can’t tell you how many friends who’ve come to visit me react totally disinterested when I say, “I really want to show you this tree.” But, Angel Oak is not just any old tree. It’s…well…you kind of have to stand before it to fully understand what I mean.

The crazy thing about Angel Oak is, nobody can quite agree on how old it is exactly. Many say between 400-500 years old, but then there are some reports stating 1,500 years old. (Honestly, I think it’s probably somewhere in the 999 years old range.) It stands 66.5 feet tall, measures 28 feet in circumference, and produces a shady umbrella that covers 17,200 square feet. From tip to tip, its longest branch measures 187 feet!

One of my favorite places to stop for lunch on your way back to Charleston is the Fat Hen. If you plan your Angel Oak excursion about an hour before lunchtime, stop in this charming French restaurant where I have enjoyed my favorite cheeseburger to date. Check out their patio out back! So quaint.
